HSRR06: Safe and multifunctional urban levees
Climate change and resulting rise of water levels makes large scale measures necessary. Especially in urban areas the traditional strengthening of the flood protection would lead to an undesired situation. The use of space for flood protection alone doesn’t match with the densification of urban area. The questions is how to shape the main flood protection in such a manner that is not just safe, but it also had an added value in the spatial context op the city.
The goal of this research is knowledge and concept development about combining spatial functions with safe flood protection within a densely urbanized area. Next to the reconnaissance of technical solutions the research will focus on process innovations regarding this topic. What does multifunctionally useable flood protection mean for legislation, management, responsibilities, existing spatial planning procedures and partnerships within the planning process?
The research will result in:
|
1. |
General solutions for three locations in Rotterdam, where generic solutions for comparable situations in The Netherlands will be identified |
| 2. | A strategy applicable for the Rotterdam region |
| 3. |
Identification of remaining research questions, necessary adjustments in the legislation and/or the roles and process |
