Climate conference Rotterdam successfully held
On November 27 2008, the Knowledge for Climate Research Programme and Climate changes Spatial Planning Programme successfully organized the conference: 'Op weg naar een klimaatbestendige samenleving', which means On route to a climate proofing society in the Netherlands.
Government, private companies and societal organisations are looking for and are analysing threats and opportunities regarding climate change. Together with scientists, research is being carried out, while knowledge and instruments are being made to develop strategies for adaptation. A lot of research has still to be done before climate change can be taken into account when planning of investments in spatial planning (infrastructure and land use).
International speakers were Ken Livingstone (former Mayor of London), Prof. Jim Hansen (a world leading climate scientist involved in the climate policy debate, University of Columbia and NASA), and Dutch speakers were Minister Cramer (Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment) and Prof.dr. Cees Veerman (Chairman of the Dutch Delta Committee).
During the afternoon, workshops were held about instruments - such as the adaptation scan -, and preliminary results of the Hotspots were presented. In the main hall of the conference centre, posters, hotspots and company presentations were visited by hundreds of people. In the evening the NOS, Dutch Broadcasting Corporation, dedicated 10 minutes in the 8 o’clock News on this conference and showed interviews with both Mr. Livingstone and Mr. Hensen.
