Hotspots and Themes
Hotspots
The research programme Knowledge for Climate develops scientific and applied knowledge needed for climate proofing the Netherlands.
The research focuses on specific locations in the Netherlands which are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of climate change. These locations are called Hotspots and function as real life laboraties where knowledge is put to practice. In the Hotspots mixed teams of policy makers, businesses and scientists work together.
- Schiphol Mainport
- Haaglanden region
- Rotterdam region
- Major rivers
- South-West Netherlands Delta
- Shallow waters and peat meadow areas
- Dry rural areas
- Wadden Sea

Themes
Knowledge for Climate does not just carry out applied research. It also develops scientific knowledge within eight research themes. Within these themes scientists focus on research on climate proofing the Netherlands.
Some themes focus more on fundamental issues, such as climate proof flood risk management, others focus on governance and decision support tools for policy makers.
Research topics are appointed in dialogue with the stakeholders from the Hotspots. International teams of scientists carry out the research and give feedback to the Hotspots.
- Climate Proof Flood Risk Management
- Climate Proof Fresh Water Supply
- Climate Adaptation for Rural Areas
- Climate Proof Cities
- Infrastructure and Networks
- High-quality Climate Projections
- Governance of Adaptation
- Decision support tools
